Photo: (Above) This is a photo from the 1975/1976 clean up, as you can see on the right side a small grave monument is visible but the remainder of the space has been overgrown by brush. (Credit: DC Historic Sites)

Photo: (Above and Below) Theses two photos are recent photos of the burial crypt that is located on the property. As you can see the crypt is in relatively good condition and can be explored by anyone. The back of the property leads up to Rock Creek Park so the location makes sense for a runaway slave hideaway location. (Credit: Atlas Obscura)

The remainder of photos are a collection of pictures I took myself when I visited the site. I felt that it was important that I experienced the site myself and got to see how bad it had really gotten. As you can see the cemetery is in disarray with overgrown underbrush and fallen tree limbs.

Photo: (Above) This grave stood out to me because of the items that were laid before it. During my undergrad I took a course on West African Religion and how it has impacted the current religious beliefs of the African American community.  What looks to be simply children's toys are actually  grave goods, usually something that is buried with the deceased to ease their journey to and in the afterlife. The grave stone reads " NANNIE Born May 28, 1848 Died May 18, 1856", this is a grave for a 8 year old child of unknown gender and the toys are for them to play with.
